Mission and Outcomes Program Learning Outcomes: 1. Support professional nursing practice decisions with concepts and theories from the biological, physical, and social sciences. 2. Plan preventative and population focused interventions with attention to effectiveness, efficiency, cost, and equity. 3. Support therapeutic nursing interventions for patients and families in a variety of healthcare and community settings using evidence based practice. 4. Apply nursing process and critical thinking when providing holistic, patient centered nursing care to diverse populations. 5. Design health care education for individuals, families, and communities. 6. Comply with the professional standards of moral, ethical, and legal conduct in practice. 7. Develop an effective communication style to interact with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary health team. 8. Model leadership when providing safe, quality nursing care; coordinating the health care team; and when tasked with oversight and accountability for care delivery. 9. Use patient care technology and information systems when providing nursing care in a variety of settings. III. Course Information Class Credit Hours: 2 semester credits/10 contact hours per week/90 hours per term. A minimum of 75% in direct patient care and maximum of 25% in non-direct patient care which may include: simulation, skills lab, ATI Learning Resources, and/or community experience as directed by faculty. Class Length: 9 weeks Study Hours: For every 1 hour in a skills lab or clinical class, it is expected that students complete 1 hour of study in preparation for class. For this course; it is expected that a minimum of 10 hours of study, outside of class, is completed each week. Course Information Course Catalog Description: This is the first clinical practicum for medical-surgical nursing course, in a series of three, going from simple to complex, devoted to learning the professional aspects of nursing in terms of complex acute health problems of the adult. The course will focus on nursing care involved in maintaining or restoring health of patients/patients with medical and surgical conditions. Course Learning Outcomes: • Course outcomes are comprised of the knowledge, skills, values and/or behaviors that students should be able to demonstrate upon completion of the course. • Course outcomes map to the Program Learning Outcomes • Must be assessed in the course to determine if learning outcomes are met 1. Demonstrates beginning role development as a manager of patient care. 2. Discusses the impact of a person’s gender, age, culture, lifestyle, attitude, and values on the morbidity and mortality of selected acute and chronic health problems. 3. Interprets various assessments and diagnostic results to identify the presence or risk of medical and surgical health problems in adult patients. 4. Selects nursing diagnoses associated with selected acute and chronic health problems. 5. Identifies the emotional and behavioral responses common to selected acute and chronic health problems; such as altered family processes, denial, body image disturbance, powerlessness, individual, and family coping, and knowledge deficit. 6. Applies critical thinking and decision making skills when selecting evidence based preventative measures and interventions that reflect patient centered care. 7. Describes pharmacotherapy and related nursing considerations for selected acute and chronic health problems. 8. Determines quality and safety measures pertinent to care of the adult medical surgical patient. 9. Plans appropriate patient instruction using teaching/learning principles. 10. Plans evaluation of effectiveness of interventions for patients with selected acute and chronic health problems. Course Information AACN Essentials for Baccalaureate Education For Professional Nursing Practice: The purpose of this section of the syllabus is to guide the student in understanding how the AACN 9 Essentials are incorporated into their education. These AACN Essentials noted below meet the criteria for the portfolio and once completed should be placed in the portfolio under the designated essential and outcome. The Essentials that are met in NURS 121L Introduction to Medical Surgical Nursing Practicum include the following: Essential I, Liberal Education for Baccalaureate Generalist Nursing Practice • Outcome 5 – Apply knowledge ofsocial and cultural factorsto the care of diverse populations. o Utilize case studies and classroom discussion to assist students in critically analyzing the influence ofsocial and cultural factors on nursing care decisions and actionsfor patient(s). Essential II, Basic Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Care and Patient Safety • Outcome 7 – Promote factors that create a culture ofsafety and caring. o Students utilize the nursing process, therapeutic care communication, teaching/learning. o Students assess the health education needs of a patient(s). Essential III, Scholarship of Evidence-based Practice • Outcome 6 – Integrate evidence, clinical judgment, interprofessional perspectives, and patient preferences in planning, implementing, and evaluating outcomes of care. o Students develop outcome criteria for patients with complex health disorders in a Concept Mapping format for each patient under their care. o Utilize evidence-based practice when identifying the foci of nursing care utilizing nursing theory and practice, pharmacology, physical assessment and otherscientific knowledge. Essential IV, Information Management and Application of Patient Care Technology • Outcome 1 – Demonstrate skill in using patient care technologies, information systems, and communication devices that support safe nursing practice. o Students will provide nursing care to individual adult patients with health issues in sub-acute and acute care settings. o Students will perform simple, direct and indirect therapeutic interventions. o Students will apply proper therapeutic modes of communication.
