MIS 605 Topic 6 DQ 1 Explain the difference between an INNER and OUTER join. Discuss why you would select one over the other using a specific example. Inner and outer joins both combine the data/information from different tables. With an inner join the database is combining the data based on a relation. This means that the tables have a common column. Inner joints do not include non-matching rows and outer joints do. Inner joins combine rows and match the conditions in doing so. On the other hand, an outer join will return every row from one specified table even when the join condition fails. An example of an inner join would be having a person with more than one phone number where more than one match would be made. You would look at a table titled Person (Person) and then inner join the table PersonPhone (Person). If the person has no phone number then there won't be a match, but if they have more than one then a match will be made with more than one column. Both outer and inner joins are useful and are used to combine two different tables. However. You use each one for a different purpose. An outer join is good when you want to combine e all of the entities in both tables. An inner join is when you only want specifics from each table and is more detailed. What is the difference between Inner and Outer Joins. (2019) Essential SQL. Retrieved from
