Reading and Annotating the Declaration of Independence
Thomas Jefferson's text on the Declaration of Independence proclaimed freedom
from British rule. People in the colonies became weary of British rule since their monarch was
unjust and ineffective. Many colonists felt stifled by British control. With peace being the
primary driving force, the colonists' desire for independence from British domination, control
over their administration and government, and personal freedom contributed to their pursuit of
independence (Jefferson).
Per Elie Wiesel's argument in his remark, Jefferson, the writer of the Declaration of
Independence, would concur with Wiesel. It was well established, as the text confirms, that the
colonists sought peace, and that's exactly what Wiesel intended. Also, the colonists may identify
with Wiesel's narrative since freedom is being taken away from the protagonists in different
ways. According to Jefferson, the reign of the King of Great Britain had been marked by
recurring abuses and usurpations, which had sought to impose absolute sovereignty over the
States. The King was an oppressive monarch who denied the colonists their independence. This
isn't dissimilar to how the Nazis imprisoned the Jews in many ways. For instance, in "Hope,
Despair, and Memory," it is said that absolved of valuables, all human connections cut, the
inmates found themselves in a cultural and social wilderness. Concern was the only emotion that
