framework for the research to be conducted.

The goal of anthropology is the reconstruction of the history of
‘primitive’ peoples. -Rivers,
The ethnographer’s purpose is to determine their place in time. -
Balfour, 1905
To elucidate the nature, origin and distribution of the races and
peoples of a limited ethological area and to define their place in
the evolutionary tree. -Haddon,
⋆⋆ All societies pass through a series of distinct evolutionary stages (From
simple to more complex).

☆ Barbarism (larger polygamous horticultural communities)
