Biochemical Thermodynamics 1
,UNIT I THERMODYNAMIC LAW AND PROPERTIES OF FLUIDS
First law of thermodynamics, a generalized balance equation and conserved quantities,
Volumetric properties of fluids exhibiting non-ideal behavior; residual properties;
estimation of thermodynamic properties using equations of state; calculations involving
actual property exchanges; Maxwell’s relations and applications.
Biochemical Thermodynamics 2
,“Power developed from heat”
Energy and its transformations.
Helps to determine the extent to which the transformation can be carried out
Scope
üHeat and work requirements for physical, or chemical processes
üDetermines whether a proposed process is possible or not
üDetermination of equillibrium conditions for chemical reactions.
üTransfer of chemical species between phases.
Limitations
üImpossible to predict whether a possible reaction will occur or not
üRate of any process is the ratio of the driving force to resistance.
Mechanisms involved in the resistance to flow of energy or material is out of
its scope. Hence cannot predict the rate at which the system approaches
equillibrium.
