DATA BASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
Introduction to Database Management Systems
The course of database management systems or in short we call it as dbms in this
video we will be seeing the basic definitions or the basic terminologies that we
need to know. In the later videos we will see more about file systems and why we
prefer the dbms approach over the file system approach. Database management
system is a collection of programs that enables users or that allows the users to
create and maintain the database. The database represents some aspects of the
real world or otherwise called as the mini world so anything in this mini world the
objects their properties the relationships between them all that is represented by
a database. A database is designed built and then filled with data for some
purpose next let us look into an illustration of database system environment so
here we have the users or the programmer who writes queries or programs and
these queries are processed by the dbms software. Based on the processed
queries, the software accesses the stored data in the database.
This is a simple example of a database that i 've taken to help you understand
what a database is and also to understand its functionalities with this we come to
the end of this video hope you all have understood the basic introduction to a
database. time in an efficient manner.
A database is a collection of data that can be accessed by computers.. IT allows
users to store and retrieve information quickly and easily..
DBMS Characteristics
In the previous video before dbms we were using the file system approach in
traditional file systems data was stored in files. In the dbms approach the entire
data is stored in a single repository and multiple users can access the data based
on their interests like for example data like student role number student name
the fees paid fees due the grades they have received etc. dbms software must
work equally well with any number of database applications as long as the
database definition or the metadata is stored in the catalog. In traditional file
processing the structure of data files is embedded in the application programs
itself so they work with only one specific database application because the
structure is declared in the program itself. If you want to add a new piece of data
say the date of birth we can add it without affecting the programs since the

,structure is separate from the programs we do n't have to change the programs.
and that is called as program data independence. A multi-user database allows
multiple users to access the database at the same time so that is support of
multiple views of the data.
Concurrency control is a major part of database application dpms must enforce or
must ensure several transaction properties. The two different transaction
properties are isolation and atomicity now what is isolation like we already
discussed in the previous example if one agent assigns a seat to a particular
passenger then that seat is blocked or it is isolated from other agents.
Database Users
IN this video We are going to see briefly the different types of database users
based on their interaction with the database database database. Users are
divided into two. THe first one is the database administrators, then we have
database designers, the end users and finally system analysts and application
programmers also called as software engineers next. We have workers behind the
scene.. A database designer is responsible for communicating with the database
users and try to understand what their requirements are and based on their
requirements. A database designer designs a database. These database designers
interact with each group of users and develop views for each of these groups of
users.. THe next category of end users end users are the people whose jobs
require access to the database. System analysts determine the requirements of
the end users, especially the Nav users or the parametric end users, and then
develop specifications for canned transactions.. THe sophisticated end users are
experts or know much about the facilities provided by the DbMs facilities. THe
workers behind the scene are operators and maintenance personnel responsible
for the actual running and maintenance of the database system environment..
You
Advantages & Disadvantages of DBMS
THe advantages of TBMs approach are controlling redundancy, restricting
unauthorized access, providing persistent storage for program objects providing
storage structures for efficient query processing, providing backup and recovery
providing multiple user interfaces representing complex relationships among data
enforcing, integrity, constraints and permitting inferencing and actions using

, rules. IN the traditional approach much of the data will be repeated. Like in this
example, details about the student are repeated twice. THe next advantage of
DbMs approach is providing persistent storage for program objects. IN. The
traditional approach the values of program variables will be discarded or deleted
when the program terminates they allow program objects to store permanently.
Such an object is said to be persistent since it is not erased or deleted once the
program ends. THe next advantage of DbMs is representing complex relationships
among data. A database can have variety of data stored in different tables and
these. data can be interrelated in many ways. Database systems define rules and
based on those rules it inferences, new information or new information is being
concluded..
IT takes very little time to develop a new application like retrieving data from the
database for printing. A report. THe database approach allows the database
administrator to define certain standards and also to enforce them among the
database users.. THis allows a large organization to invest in more powerful
equipments rather than each department having their own equipment.. THere is
always an overhead cost for providing security, concurrency control recovery,
etc.. MOre problems can arise if the database designer and the database
administrator do not design the database properly. Rather than using DbMs. We
can use the regular file system when the database and the applications are very
simple and well defined and there are no changes expected..
History of Database Applications
EArly database applications using hierarchical and network systems were based
on three database models. The hierarchical database model or the hierarchical
systems network model based systems and inverted file systems.. EArly database
systems were implemented on large and expensive mainframe computers, and
they were implemented in the mid-1960s through the 1970s through 1970s and
1980s. Interchanging data on the web for e-commerce Www or the world wide
web or just. The web is a large network of interconnected computers.. Users can
create documents using Html or the hypertext markup language and store these
documents on web servers.. These documents can be linked together to other
documents through pointers called as hyperlinks.. Many of these applications, so
we get them in the form of modules to use with the relational databases, and that
is about extending database capabilities for new applications With this we come
