THE SIMPLICITY MOVEMENT AND THE FREEGANS
In this week's discussion, reflect on your own life. Are you trapped on the treadmill of
consumption and consuming more and more? Is the treadmill metaphor accurate when
you reflect on your experience or would you use a different metaphor to represent your
relationship with consumption?
To get started, read the following Social Action Case Study (Links to an external site.).
One you have completed the reading, provide a summary and action plan based on
evidence from the case study and the assigned reading for this week. You must include
specific examples and a clear recommendation as part of your response.

In addition to answering the overarching discussion prompt, I invite you to also
reflect on this video:

A Rich Live With Less Stuff (Links to an external site.)
After viewing the video, briefly summarize the most important ideas it presented.
Then discuss:
Have you heard of minimalism? What's your experience with it? Do you find the
concept appealing or problematic?

I think the best lesson I have learned is that we truly don't need much to be happy. It
has also left me a lot of time to dedicate myself to being more intentional with my
free time. Since we don't have to maintain a huge home, it has left me time for
leisure activities and it turns out, that makes me happier than having an abundance
of "things". I put a lot of emphasis on my work/life balance now, more than I ever
have before and it has drastically lowered my stress levels. Downsizing has also
given my wife and I a huge financial leg up as well.

Glynne definitely, Downsizing is common in a recessionary situation where
downsizing helps to cut costs. Some companies also layoff a percentage of
low performers every year to maintain a competitive and efficient work force.

That is one of the biggest problem of most humans on earth, I remember telling my
self that I would be happier when I made a certain income and I got there and still
was not happy. Being yourself is one of the most commonest way to be happy in
your life period. Being yourself means living life how you want to live it, regardless of

, other people's opinions. And it means you respect yourself. Don't worry about what
others think. You can't control them or their thoughts.

Gideon,
I totally agree with you. I feel the same way. Often times, people always feel that if
they have more , then they will be happier in life. I used to think that was true as
well, until I had more and still felt the same way. Also, there are so many rich and
famous people who have a lot of money and materials, but commit suicide. I like that
doing more leisure activities makes you happy. I think if we can focus more on what
we like to do, rather than what we have, then the world would be a happier place in
general. A lot of people that I know, take jobs in fields that they have no interest in,
but they are in that field for the money they can make and in return they are
depressed about their job.

Olusoji, this matter of doing what you do not like just because of money is another
whole topic to talk about. I appreciate you and I am glad that you feel the same way!
