Edward vi Consolidation of power–
●Edward vi Somerset– 1547-1549
- Lord protector
- 16 member regency council balanced between reformers and
conservatives i.e cranmer- conservative- and southampton- reformer
- Somerset makes himself somerset immediately
- He is edward’s uncle
- Council relatively balanced balanced protestants and catholics
- somerset= good duke
- The Earl of Warwick was jealous of somerset’s power and so convinced
somerset’s brother thomas seymour (who had been left off the privy
council) to plot against him.
- This plot was caught by somerset who charged his brother with 33
charges of treason and executed him in 1549
- Somerset was authoritarian
- He was arrested in 1549 for his failure to prevent the western and kett
rebellions
- Charged with treason and executed in 1552

1553
- Lord protector
- Earl of warwick takes over after somerset in 1550
- Makes himself president of the council and immediately makes
himself northumberland
- Purged the council of catholics altogether– gardiner put in the
tower
●Edward vi 1553 succession
crisis
- Edward dies 1553 aged 15
- Mary is the heir to the throne– she is hugely catholic
- Northumberland asks edward to change his father’s will from his
deathbed, making Lady Jane Grey the successor not Mary as LJG was
protestant and the only claimant to the throne despite her not wishing to
be queen
