MIP1501
ASSIGNMENT 3:
2023
Question 1

1. Four types of models in learning fractions are:

a) Area Models: This model represents fractions by showing shaded parts of a whole or region.
For example, a rectangular area can be divided into smaller parts, and the shaded area can
represent the fraction.

b) Number Line Models: This model represents fractions as points on a number line. For example,
1/2 can be shown as the point halfway between 0 and 1 on a number line.

c) Set Models: This model represents fractions as sets of objects. For example, a set of six
objects can be divided into two equal sets of three objects, representing the fraction 3/6.

d) Part-Whole Models: This model represents fractions as parts of a whole object. For example, a
pizza can be divided into equal slices, and each slice represents a fraction of the whole pizza.

These models can be progressively used in an intermediate phase mathematics classroom by
starting with simpler models, such as the area and set models, and gradually moving to more
complex models, such as the number line and part-whole models. Teachers can use a
combination of these models to help students visualize and understand fractions better.
