Tesco:
Tesco is a globalized organization that was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen as a group of market
stall. It is the second-largest retailer in the world measured by profits. Tesco's purpose is to sell
groceries and food to invest money and make large sums of profit and to dominate the general
market e.g. Make more profit than Sainsbury's, Morrison's and Asda. Tesco is a large business as
it is globalised and has over 1.1 million employees worldwide.
Tesco's belong to the tertiary sector because it supports the production and distribution process.
E.g. selling a product that has been advertised and packaged which is ready to sell.
Tesco is a Public Limited Company (PLC), so it is owned by shareholders. Many organisations
start of as a private limited company and later become a PLC to raise capital in order to expand
e.g. Virgin Media and develop the company which can play a key role in the competitive retail
market. The advantage of a PLC is that shares can be sold to the general public unlike a private
limited company. Also Shareholders have limited liability.
Ethical:
Tesco has taken all their non-food buyers and technical teams through detailed training in
purchasing practices to ensure all their dealings with our suppliers are fair and ethical.
"Buying and selling our products responsibly means ensuring everyone in our supply chain is
treated honestly and fairly, and that care is taken to minimize the impact our products have on
the environment."
“Tesco are the founder member of the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) and has expected all
suppliers to meet the standards set out under the ETI Base Code and ensure their workers the
rights within it. While suppliers operating in developed markets mostly comply with the
provisions of the Base Code, compliance in other markets remains more challenging. We support
our suppliers, wherever they are based, to meet the standards we require. In 2009, we launched
Trading Fairly, a new approach to ethical trading."
Relationships with suppliers to make Trading Fairly a reality, Tesco has invested in supporting
suppliers to deliver it. Our ethical trade managers in Bangladesh, China and South Africa help
