M2 explain how measures have been implemented to overcome barriers to communication, with
reference to a selected case.

Sensory deprivation

The care home has residents with hearing and visual impairments, and there are no braille or audio
resources for the residents who are blind or visually impaired. Additionally, staff members are not
aware of how to support residents with sensory impairments and are often impatient when
communicating with them or just make assumptions about their needs, which can further contribute
to sensory deprivation. This can lead to feelings of isolation and frustration for the residents and
may negatively impact their physical and mental well-being. This is a compounded by the fact that
there is no braille or audio resources available for the blind and visually impaired residents, and that
there is a lack of understanding among the staff about how to communicate effectively with
residents who speak languages other than English. The loud tv in the day room is also a barrier to
effective communication, as it can further inhibit communication for the hearing- impaired
residents. The limited lighting in the rooms can make it difficult for visually impaired residents to see,
and the lack of braille or audio resources can be a challenge for residents who are blind or visually
impaired.

Sensory deprivation

The preferable mode of communication for a service user who suffers from sensory deprivation will
depend on the requirements and preferences of the individual. For this particular group of service

people who are both deaf and blind. The greatest option for people with restricted mobility might be
speech recognition technology. Moreover, audio-based communication like podcasts or audio books
could be more appropriate for persons with poor vision. Finally, visual communication methods like
text or video chat may be the best choice for people with poor hearing.

How might this increase their access to health and social care?

Access to health and social services may be improved in several ways by sensory deprivation. First, it
can lower stress levels, which in turn can enhance both physical and mental health. Moreover, it can
enhance the quality of sleep, which can enhance focus and attention. Finally, it can aid in lowering
feelings of loneliness and isolation, which may make it simpler for people to seek out the support
they require from social and health care services. With giving people the chance to concentrate on
their physical and mental health, sensory deprivation can boost access to health and social care.
Individuals may be better able to unwind and consider their current position by decreasing or
removing external stimulation, which will enable them to address their needs and problems more
