Lecture - 1 Project and Production
Management - An Overview
The terms "project" and "production" share similarities but also
have some differences. Both involve converting raw materials into
finished goods or services. However, the main distinction lies in
the frequency of the activities. For example, a project is typically
a one-time endeavour. Once a factory, such as Maruti Udyog, is
built, it becomes a production entity. Managing a factory involves
the interweaving of projects and production. Projects involve
initiating production and resolving issues related to operations,
maintenance, housekeeping, marketing, distribution, quality
control, and more.

Real-life productions and projects are often intertwined, like rice
and peas in a pulav dish, which is intimately linked and eaten
together. The planning and control of production can also consider
operations planning, which involves not only production but also
service delivery.

In a factory, the primary goal of production is to add value to raw
materials so that the final product can sell at a higher price.
Production systems must be designed to maximize or optimize
the value-adding process. Every production system has a life
cycle, starting from the design stage, through the operational
phase, and finally to scrapping. Throughout these stages,
managerial issues arise, and a manager must efficiently manage
the system at each stage of its life cycle. This exercise aims to
maximize the production of desirable goods, utilizing inputs in a
specific manner.

Inputs are vital, and each one contributes to a specific academic
discipline. For example, managing the workforce requires a
discipline called Manpower Development or Human Resource
Development. The environment also plays a significant role in the
production system. The environment includes social, economic,
and political factors. These components affect the production
system, which imparts both a dynamic nature and an element of

,uncertainty. For instance, the government may announce the
prices of specific raw materials today. However, tomorrow, the
government may announce something else. Similarly, there could
be much social pressure on the production system.

Managing a production system is like riding a horse, which is
dynamic and uncertain. It is not easy to program operations for a
specific production system, as strategies that work today may not
work in the future. When managing a production system, altering
the physical product or causing a psychological transformation
within an individual is necessary. Transportation is essential in
bringing materials to the right place to increase value.

Value addition within the factory involves improving various
things. The input-output box goes through a physical
transformation in manufacturing, a physiological transformation in
hospitals, and an attitudinal change in reading.

Effectiveness is the ability to achieve a desired goal, while
efficiency is comparing actual performance to target performance.
For example, the individual or bureaucratic agent in charge of
disbursing funds may show good operational efficiency in
handling the money. However, the overall effectiveness of the
project may be lacking.

Flexible manufacturing involves producing what the customer
wants using the same materials while efficiently organizing
production machines and the workforce. Flexibility is essential and
highly valued nowadays to adapt to changes. Manufacturing firms
face more competition and increasingly demanding consumers
who expect better quality, faster delivery times, and lower costs.
While manufacturers can keep costs down by lowering prices, it is
essential to keep in mind that there are limits to how low prices
can go.

,The manufacturer's primary goal is customer satisfaction, but
customers may want greater product variety. Increasing quality
does not necessarily mean a higher price, as the increased
demand can often surpass the added costs. Research in
production management focuses on dealing with this issue.

It is now understood that the transformation process does not
work in isolation. The entire supply chain should be evaluated to
improve efficiency rather than just the manufacturing process.
Operations management involves managerial activities, such as
selecting, designing, operating, controlling, and updating
production systems.

The following lecture will focus on the life cycle of production.

Lecture - 2 Project Management: An
Overview

, Introduction to Project Management
In this course, we will learn about project management. A
project is defined as a set of interrelated jobs that lead to the
completion of the project. We will explore projects from three
angles: local neighbourhood, national, and global. Let us look
at some examples of projects:

 Preparing for an exam
 Drafting a book
 Organising a school function
 Cleanliness drive in a locality
 Launching a new satellite by ISRO
 Literacy campaign or poverty eradication campaign by
the government
 Preparation of the annual budget by the government
 Organising peace missions between countries
 Space exploration
Each project is a collection of different jobs that need to be
com. The management of these jobs is the most significant
aspect of a project. Most projects are non-repetitive and are a
one-time effort. Unlike mass or batch production systems,
where production is ongoing and producing goods of a similar
kind, a project is a non-repetitive venture. It is managed by a
project manager who coordinates with different sections of
society to set goals and make the project successful.

Project Management: Coordinating Unique
Projects
Project management involves managing the uniqueness of a
project. Even if the two projects are similar, there are
differences in terms of soil testing, the independence of jobs,
and the time and resources required. Each job is a micro cost
centre in a project, and it is necessary to ensure that these
individual jobs are done as well as possible to control costs,
meet deadlines, and ensure project success.
