Weight Management
Weight Management
•Is incredibly complex, Scientists and health professionals do not agree on:
•How to lose weight
•How to maintain weight
•why some people are overweight and obese.
•Why people lose weight and gain it back
What you weigh depends on:
1. Your family genes
2. Your body hormones
3. Environment you live in.
4. Eating Habits
Hormones Affect your Weight.
A hormone is a chemical messenger in your body that controls and regulates body functions.
Estrogen & Testosterone (sex hormones)-affect fat distribution on body
•Gherlin-Circulates in blood just before meals to stimulate hunger and decreases after eating
•Leptin-Suppresses hunger but obese people seem to be resistant to leptin
High fructose diet may contribute to leptin resistance.
Food environment may affect what you weigh
Never before in history has food (junk food, fast food) been so available, so cheap, so
addictive. We are surrounded by foods that are cheap, delicious, and addictive. That is:
artificially added sugar, high fructose corn syrup, salt, fat makes refined junk foods very
addictive thus hard to stop eating and no satiety
What is Satiety?
Satiety is feeling pleasantly full after eating. Satiety after eating leads to loss of interest in
continuing to eat but if foods do not provide satiety, keep eating
Junk foods do not provide satiety.
Which food can provide satiety or addiction?
1. An apple-Has fiber for satiety, use teeth for chewing
2. Potato Chips- No satiety, salt makes it addictive
3. Cupcake-No satiety, sugar makes it addictive.
Eating Habits affecting weight.
1. Portion size has grown.
2. Snacking is now acceptable
3. Overeating is never seen as gluttonous.
4. People no longer cook.
5. Mealtime is no longer important
6. Meal from a drive through is ok
7. Americans want cheap food that taste good.
Obesity vs over weight.
