Haitian Revolution:
- a slave revolt that took place in French colony of Saint-Domingue
- 1791 to 1804.
- led by Toussaint L'Ouverture
- former slave who became military leader
- helped to mobilize the enslaved population.
- sparked by a combination of factors
- the mistreatment of enslaved people
- enlightenment/new ideas of the french revolution
- spread of anti-slavery sentiment.
- one of the largest and most successful slave revolts in history
- haitian revolution lead to:
- establishment of the first independent black nation in the world
- even further spread of enlightenment ideals
- was marked by brutal violence on both sides:
- enslaved population fought against french colonizers & other enslaved people -> (supported
the colonial regime)
- revolution ultimately succeeded in:
- defeating french
- establishing haiti as an independent nation
- but was at a great cost in terms:
- of lives lost
- infrastructure destroyed.
- was significant event in history of the americas & the world
- highlighted potential for enslaved people to resist and overthrow oppressors
- inspired future anti-colonial + anti-slavery movements

i. led to the establishment of the first independent black state.

French Revolution
- took place from 1789 to 1799
- was a period of radical social and political upheaval in france
- began with the meeting of the Estates-General
- had not been called since 1614
- was composed of representatives of the three estates:
- the clergy, the nobility, and the common people

clergy (1% of population) nobility (2% of commonfolk (97% of pop)
1st estate population) 2nd estate 3rd estate

- no taxes req - none/ very little tax - basically everyone
- very high class - also pretty high class else (except slaves)
- roman catholic & - lived lavish & - very high tax
was super corrupt luxurious life - agreed with
- did not like - agreed with first half enlightenment ideas
enlightenment ab enlightenment and stuff
ideals bc it bc of the shared - did not like the 1
interfered w/ their power + ideas. and 2% bc of the
power & money - had lots of money corruptness
- third estate
- made up of the common people
- broke away from the estates-general (bc it was bad)
- formed the national assembly
- vowed not to disband until a new constitution was created.
- rev was driven by enlightenment ideas of liberty, equality, and fraternity
- was marked by:
- the storming of the bastille
- the reign of terror
- the rise of napoleon bonaparte
- monarchy was abolished
