, IMMUNITY
Defn: The resistance offered by the body to the harmful effects of pathogenic microbial
infection is called IMMUNITY. The cells and the molecules responsible for immunity are
known as Immune System. The Study of Immunity is called IMMUNOLOGY
TYPES OF IMMUNITY
1. Innate or Natural immunity
2. Acquired or Adaptive immunity
INNATE OR NATURAL IMMUNITY (Resistance to infections)
• Individual have immunity according to their genetic and Constitutional make up.
• It may be Specific or Non Specific and may vary between species, races and individuals
ACQUIRED IMMUNITY (Adaptive immunity)
• The potency of immune response is acquired by experience only.
• It is classified into two types.
• They are Active Immunity and Passive Immunity 2
,3
, ACTIVE IMMUNITY
• Resistance developed by an individual as a result of an antigenic stimulus.
• This leads to synthesis of antibodies.
• It is further classified into
• Naturally Acquired Active Immunity
• Artificial Stimulated Active Immunity
Naturally acquired active immunity: It results from natural infection by pathogens which
may or may not produce a disease. It obtained from clinical infection like measles,
chicken pox, pneumonia and subclinical infections like child from Slum areas are
frequently have attack of polio without any signs and symptoms
Artificially stimulated active immunity: Resistance induced by vaccines (live or killed
M.O.). Eg: BCG Vaccine, Diptheria toxoid
