(Openstax, n.d) states that businesses operates in a dynamic environment that has a direct impact
on how they operates and determines whether they will be able to achieve their profit making
objective.
There are three types of business sectors which businesses operates within and there is primary
sector, secondary sector and tertiary sector (Msmonline, 2021:1).A business sector is sub-division of
the economic activities such as primary, secondary and tertiary (Western Cape Government ,2020:
15).
Western Cape Government (2020:15) defines a primary sector as a sector that deals with the
extraction of raw materials and natural resources examples of businesses within this sector are:
1) Mining
2) Fishing
3) Agricultural
4) Forestry
Secondary sector deals with processing raw materials into finished goods while the tertiary sector
renders services (Western Cape Government, 2020:15).An example of businesses within this sector
are:
1) Manufacturing
2) Construction
3) Generation of electricity
4) Provision of Water
The tertiary sector refers to all businesses that offer services to other businesses and consumers it
includes:
1) Retailers
2) Wholesalers
3) Banks
4) Insurance
5) Transportation
6) Tourism
7) Hospitality
