,Introduction
• The first countries after Britain to develop factories and railroads were
Belgium, Switzerland, France, and the states that became Germany.
• Later spread to the United states and other countries. By 1900 the Unit
States had overtaken Britain in manufacturing
• 1870 both Russia and Japan were forced by losing wars to abolish thei
feudal systems and to compete in the industrializing world
• In 21st century, Brazil, China, and India are becoming economic
powerhouses
• Selected case studies: Japan, Singapore, and sub-Saharan Africa

• 1603 – 1868 -Japan was under the Tokugawa Shoguns (rulers at the
time), Japan was isolated
• Foreigners were banned from coming in – they were considered
barbarians, Japanese were forbidden to travel to other countries
• 1854 -US sends Perry to Tokyo with 4 steamships
• The Japanese shoguns impressed by American show of force.
• Japan agreed to open its ports and signed the Treaty of Kanagawa.
• Gave trading rights to the U.S.
• Britain, France and Russia also soon gained trading rights.
