[1 mark] b) Use the image below (figure 1) to help you describe two key differences between bacterial and animal cells. [4 marks] Figure 1 1. 2. c) A student set up a practical to investigate the effects of antiseptics on bacterial growth. They placed paper discs that had been soaked in antiseptics on to an agar plate that was covered in bacteria. The bacterial plate is shown in the image below. Figure 2 Explain the reason for each of the following stages in the method. i. Labelling the plate on the bottom of the agar dish. [2 marks] ii. Opening the lid away from you. [2 marks] iii. Sealing the lid with small bits of tape. [2 marks] d) The bacterial plate is incubated at 25C for 36 hours. Assume there were 1,000 bacterial cells when the plate started inoculation (time = 0) and the time it takes for a bacterium to divide is 45 minutes. Calculate the number of bacteria at the end of 4 hours 30 minutes. [3 marks] e) To determine the most effective antiseptic a student wanted to measure the clear zone around the disc. Describe how to determine the area of the clear zones around the top two discs in figure 2. [4 marks] Stem cell cloning can be used to quickly produce clones of plants. a) Explain the unique features of a stem cell. [3 marks] b) Describe the differences between embryonic stem cells, adult animal stem cells, and plant stem cells. [4 marks] c) Name the part of the plant where stem cells that are used in cloning are found. [1 mark] d) Evaluate the use of cloning in relation to plants. [6 marks] a) State the four components that make up the composition of blood. [4 marks] b) Blood travels towards the heart in veins, one such is shown in the image below (figure 3). Explain how the structure of a vein is related to its function. Figure 3 [3 marks] c) Name the part labelled A in the diagram of the heart (figure 4). [1 mark] Figure 4 d) Describe the flow of blood into and out of part A. You should include the names of any blood vessels involved. [3 marks] e) Part A contain a group of cells that stimulate the heart. i. State what these cells control. [1 mark] ii. State what can be used if this group of cells is not working correctly. [1 mark] 04 a) Coronary heart disease is a non-communicable disease that kills 17 million people each year. State the three ways in which cardiovascular diseases can be treated. [3 marks] 1. 2. 3. b) Define the term non-communicable. [1 mark] c) Describe how coronary heart disease develops and affects the heart. [5 marks] d) The following graph shows the trends in deaths from coronary heart disease. Describe the change that can be seen from . [4 marks] 05 Gonorrhoea is a disease that is transmitted during sex, it can cause yellow or green discharge and pain. a) State the type of pathogen that leads to Gonorrhoea. [1 mark] b) Give one method that can prevent a person being infected with Gonorrhoea [1 mark] c) When a pathogen enters the body, the immune system tries to destroy it. State three ways a white blood cell defends against pathogens. [3 marks] 1. 2. 3. d) Gonorrhea can be treated with antibiotics. i. Explain why antibiotics cannot be used to cure viral infections. [2 marks] ii. Patients with gonorrhea can also be told they can take painkillers. Explain why they need to take both antibiotics and painkillers to treat the gonorrhea. [2 marks] iii. Aspirin is an example of a painkiller. Where does the chemical used in the drug aspirin originate from? [1 mark] e) New drugs are being developed for use in the future. State three things new drugs need to be tested for. [3 marks] 1. 2. 3. A student was carrying out an investigation looking at respiration in yeast. They wanted to start by adding a sugar solution to a conical flask. They were provided with two white crystalline powders. Unfortunately, these were unlabeled. a) It is possible to test the powder to determine which one is glucose. a) Describe the test for sugars. You should include the name of the test and the positive result. [3 marks] b) This test is a qualitative test. Define the term qualitative. [1 mark] c) Suggest how this experiment could be improved. [1 mark] b) Below is the word equation for fermentation, complete it with the chemical symbols for each part. Glucose  ethanol + carbon dioxide ……..………..  2C2H5OH + 2 …….………. [2 marks] c) The products of anaerobic respiration are useful in industry. Use the previous equation to describe two different uses of fermentation.
