ELLIPTICAL CONSTRUCTION
WHAT IS ELLIPTICAL CONSTRUCTION?
Elliptical Construction is combination from 2 sentences with different subject but have the
same verb or complement. In elliptical construction, some words are left out in a sentence but
the sentence can still be understood.
1. Positive Elliptical (too-so)
In Positive elliptical sentences using Too and So. In this form, two things must be
considered:
• The auxiliary verb used must match the time form of the first sentence.
• Too is always behind the Auxiliary verb while so is always at the beginning of the
Auxiliary verb.
Example
She buys a math book Andy buys a math book
▪ She buys a math, and Andy does too
▪ She buys and a math book, and so does Andy
They ride bicycle to their campus I ride bicycle to my campus
▪ They ride bicycle to their campus, and so do I
▪ They ride bicycle to their campus, and I am too
