Following Your Passion: Lessons from Jeff Bezos and Oprah Winfrey
25 years ago, Jeff Bezos told Dave that he wanted him to invest in his
company. Bezos had a vision of starting an online bookstore in his garage
and shipping out of there. Dave was hesitant but ultimately decided to
follow his passion and take the less safe-path. He had always wanted to be
an inventor and didn't want to regret not trying. As a young boy, he had
invented things like an automatic gate closer and aluminium foil baking pan
alarms to trap his siblings. Bezos encouraged him to pursue his passion and
not chase the hot passion of the day. Dave is proud of his choice and
advises others to choose the hard path of following their passions.
• Choose to do hard things
• Follow your passions and convictions
• Be original and humble
• Take pride in your choices, not just your gifts
• Be relentless and daring
• Play it safe when necessary, but be swashbuckling when it's
tough
• Love your work or you won't be good at it
Oprah Winfrey echoes the sentiment of following your passion and making
choices you'll be proud of when you're 80. She believes that there has never
been a better time to be alive and take advantage of all the opportunities the
world has to offer. She encourages individuals to use their gifts and make
choices that align with their values and passions. Will you choose ease and
comfort or service and adventure? Will you be original or bluff it out when
you're wrong? Will you be relentless or give up when faced with rejection?
These are the choices that will shape your life and determine your success.
