P3: Explain the stages of an investigation process and the resources available
during an investigation process.
Processes of the investigation.
There is a specific process that police officers must follow:
Eu route to the scene (The officer responding to the crime, will need to
obtain a full picture of what has happened. The officer should gather all the
relevant information from the call handler, about the incident that has
occurred, and the parties involved, which allows them to make an initial risk
assessment.)
Actions on arrival to the scene (One of the first things an officer arriving
should do is make sure no more harm will come to victim or anyone else on
the scene.)
When access to the property is denied (The victim or the perpetrator may
deny the responding officer access into the property, the officer should
assess why they are being denied access, like if the victim is in an abusive
relationship and does not want to get hurt by their partner or if the
perpetrator is saying that nothing had happened, if the officer views that
there might be someone in danger, they are allowed to enter the property by
fore under section 17e of the PACE (Police And Criminal Evidence).)
Medical treatment and forensic medical examination (The officer should
make sure to do an immediate assessment of whether anyone on the scene
needs medical attention like an ambulance. The officer should also think
about completing an early evidence kit.)
Carrying out an initial investigation (When arriving at a scene the responding
officer should make sure to call the crime scene examiner and think about, if
there is any physical evidence, like clothing, bedding or if there is any sign of
a disturbance, if there is any forensic evidence like, blood pattern
disturbance, any types of biological evidence, or DNA, if there is anything
that they should photograph of, whether there is any CCTV cameras that
could of videoed the suspect, if any of the neighbors might have seen
anything or if they could use any form of social media site to help track down
the suspect or victim.)
Scene protection (Making sure to protect the initial scene is vital as there will
be forensic evidence that will help in the prosecution of the suspect. Officers
should be aware that the crime may have been committed alongside other
incidents like domestic or sexual abuse, but these types of offences may not
, be immediately apparent. They should also be aware that the suspect may
still have access to the scene.)
Injury photos (If it is possible, the responding officer should try to make sure
to take photos of the victims' injuries. The officer should also try to take
forensic photographs, if possible, but if the victim does not want them to be
taken, so the officer must try to make sure that they keep in contact with the
victim.)
Determining the primary perpetrator and dealing with counter allegations
(The officers must make sure that they do not jump to any conclusions about
which party has committed the crime. There are many instances where
something might look a certain way, but it is actually something else, for
example the victim may have acted in self-defense, or the suspect may be
making a counter allegation against the victim.)
First responder as a witness (As the responding officers are witnesses, they
should be ready to make a witness's statement which will be included in the
prosecution file. The supervisor of the responding officers should be mindful
that some of the situations may be triggering to officer and should make
sure that if there is any previous history that it has been disclosed.)
Identifying risks (Making sure to identify any risks when arriving on the
scene, making sure no one gets hurt is the responding officer's main
responsibility until the specialists arrive on the scene. The officer must
conduct an initial risk assessment when arriving on the scene)

responsibility to make sure that the victim has been told all the options they
can take and what support is available for them. The responding officer
