RELEVENCE OF STUDYING INDIAN SOCIAL
PROBLEMS IN SOCIAL WORK CARRICULAM
In my point of view we the people of India must be aware about the social
culture, social issues, problems and all other aspects including laws. Why do we
need to know about our society? Because we are born and brought up here, so
we have a responsibility over the society and its development. If you want to
develop society you should eliminate the social problems.
There is saying that if you want to change the society, first you change yourself,
then your family will change, then automatically the society will change. We can
use this same method here that, initially social work started in USA or UK but in
the current scenario social work is impleading and implementing in India, so the
development and welfare of our country is our responsibility so if we want to
make a change, we completely need an awareness about the structure and
functioning and history too. This is why we are studying Indian social problems in
our social work curriculum.
Social work is a practice oriented discipline, so we do not lie down in books and
journals, we go through the society, people and the culture and the problems
then only we can make positive impact.
The major social problems in India are: Population problems, casteism,
untouchability, regionalism, linguism and communalism, beggary, unemployment,
poverty, labour problems, rural problems, problems of industrialization and
urbanization, prostitution, crime, suicide, juvenile delinquency, youth tensions
and student unrest and finally the problems of democracy. If you want to do
anything about these problems, definitely you should study Indian social
problems and then only you can make it into practice. So Indian social problems
are unavoidable in curriculum.
