HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL WORK IN INDIA
Social work history in India can be divided into 3 periods
>social work in ancient period 2500 BC-AD 1000
>social work in medieval period
>social work in modern period AD 1800 onwards
PRE BRITISH PERIOD1800 AD
Pre British system was nominated by cast system, upper caste
protected lower caste people in time of some difficulties, and some of
the important aspects are
JOINT FAMILY it is like a trust sharing common property. It protected
aged, children and women. It served as social trust.
VILLAGE COMMUNITY Indian villages are independent in matters of
food, clothing and shelter. The whole community used to take each
other.
VILLAGE TEMPLE in every village there were temple. People donated
money to the temple and under the system socially backward people
were protected.
DURING THE BRITISH PERIOD
Before the advent of British India partially lived in village the the
economy of the village was self sufficient. But under the British rule
only industries allowed to develop. These economic and organization
change brought down the economic conditions of Indians. All the
problems are chiefly related with health, housing, child and women
