VALUES OF SOCIAL WORK
Values are often confused.lt is an important component of social work practice. Values
are not probable.they are what is held to be desirable; they are used to identify what is
preferred. Value assumptions are used in different ways in the helping endeavor.
'Milton rockeach' defined value as "an enduring belief that a specific Mode or end state
of existence is personally or socially preferable to an opposite or Converse mode or end
the state of existence". He also stated that values, rather than standing alone exist in
systems; that is individual values are organised in such a manner that they have a
relative importance to other values. He construed values as being relatively enduring,as
beliefs on which persons to act by preference and as modes of conduct or end stage of
existence. Value beliefs are conceptions of what is desirable, there is an emotion or
feeling aspect to them and they lead to action. Social Work practice is based on a set of
values that is often expressed in such principles as the worth and dignity of the
individual, the right to self-determination and the right to confidentiality.
PREFERRED CONCEPTIONS OF PEOPLE
> Social workers believe in inherent worth and dignity.
>Each person has an inherent capacity and drove toward change that can make life
more fulfilling.
>Each person has responsibility for himself and his fellow human beings including
society.
>People need to belong
>There are human needs common to each person, each person is unique and different
from others.
