There are several types of traditional marriage system in my country. Though all of them are not
practiced today on a large scale, it is necessary to review them because they once existed as part of
the custom of our people.
One type of marriage is the child-marriage. This occurs when two families are very closely knitted in
friendship marriage. When the mother is pregnant, the other family stakes the love of one of their
young men to the baby that is to be born, should it be a girl. The baby is betrothed and the family of
the husband to be plays an active part in the naming ceremony and in the child’s upbringing until is of
age to marry.
Child-marriage also takes place when a baby girl is born in a family where the father is too poor to
provide the requirements for the naming ceremony. He indicates his difficulties to a friendly family
which quickly understands the situation and makes a formal betrothal by supplying all the necessary
requirement.
