Stages of the Exam
The UPSC exam is conducted in three stages:
Civil Services Preliminary Examination (Objective Type)
Civil Services Main Examination (Written Type)
Personality Test/Interview
Preliminary Examination
The preliminary examination is divided into two papers:
General Studies Paper 1 (GS1)
Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) or General Studies Paper 2
(GS2)
General Studies Paper 1 (GS1)
GS1 comprises 100 objective-type questions, and each question
carries two marks. However, there is a penalty of 0.33 percent or
0.66 marks for each incorrect answer. Therefore, it is essential to
mark only the correct answers on the OMR sheet.
Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) or General Studies Paper 2 (GS2)
CSAT or GS2 is an aptitude test that assesses students' aptitude
in comprehension, mathematics, and communication skills. It
comprises 80 questions, and each question carries 2.5 marks. To
qualify for the mains examination, students must score at least
66 out of 200 marks in CSAT/GS2.
