Quantitative and Quantitative research

Quantitative research is the study of a phenomenon by collecting numerical data and

information that will be analyzed by using mathematical methods like SPSS to provide

conclusion over the same phenomenon. Statistical applications, therefore, are important in

quantitative studies. In the other hand, qualitative research is where the study involves a

collection of in-depth information as regards a certain behaviour by asking questions and

collecting other general information (Jones, 2017). This does not use the application of statistical

methods at all. There are a number of quantitative methods that can be used to study

criminology. This, however, will consist of collecting data and other information from the field

and analyzing it to provide the best conclusions as regards a phenomenon.

Surveys are one of the methods that can be used to study crime alongside field studies

and other types of evaluation research activities. Using quantitative studies comes with

challenges which include difficulty in interpretation of the information when one does not have

the grasp to read the analysis. This data and analysis at the same time can be manipulated to suit

the expectations of the researcher (Jones, 2017). The qualitative research methods that can be

used in the study of crime include participative observation which includes where the research is

involved in the activities of the selected population and observations are recorded. One

challenge of this kind of study and other qualitative studies is that it is time-consuming and the

researcher needs to be keen on collecting various data as regards the selected problem of study.
