Personality theory
The most plausible personality theory of explaining crime is psychoanalytical theory.
This theory holds that these behaviors of an individual are influenced by his or her unconscious
mind, childhood experiences as well as sexual and aggressive instincts (Mitchell et al., 2015).
What happens in an unconscious mind comes to materialize in the conscious mind sometimes
later. This theory was founded by Sigmund Freud. According to Freud, a person’s level of
consciousness is divided into three levels; the conscious, unconscious and preconscious. The
conscious level consists of thought and feelings that a person is presently aware of. The
preconscious level consists of thoughts and feelings that an individual is not aware of but can
easily enter into the conscious mind. The unconscious level consists of feelings and thoughts that
a person is not aware of but has the potential to influence a person’s thoughts (Mitchell et al.,
2015). What a person does depends on the interaction between these levels of consciousness.
Personality arises from the interaction of feelings and activities in these three levels of
consciousness. Moreover, what happens in the when an individual is not aware is stored in the
unconscious part of the mind and it is later transferred into the conscious mind. So, if what were
stored are criminal-related memories, an individual will become a criminal in later stage of life. I
think this theory is the most plausible in explaining crime because if a person had criminal
experiences in childhood that he or she was not aware, he or she is likely to engage in a criminal
in the later stage of life. This is because the thoughts and feelings in the unconscious level have
entered into conscious level (Mitchell et al., 2015). Furthermore, this theory of personality
explains that the childhood experiences influences the personality of an individual. This is true
