What is an Operating System?
An operating system is a system software that acts as an
interface between the user and the hardware. It is a software
that is installed on your system and its basic functionality is to
provide interaction between the user and hardware.
In the diagram below, you can see that the hardware in a
laptop or desktop computer consists of the CPU, which is the
brain of the system, and the input/output devices such as the
keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
Functionalities of Operating System
The operating system performs a variety of functions to ensure
that the hardware and software work together smoothly. Some
of the key functionalities of an operating system include:
Memory Management: The operating system
manages the computer's memory and allocates memory
to various programs and processes as needed.
Process Management: The operating system
manages the execution of programs and processes,
ensuring that they run smoothly and without conflicts.
Device Management: The operating system manages
the input/output devices, ensuring that they are working
correctly and communicating with the computer as
needed.
File Management: The operating system manages
files and directories on the computer, ensuring that
they are stored and retrieved as needed.
