Skeletal System
1. ANS diaphysis: middle section of long bone; the section between
the epiphyses.
2. ANS medullary cavity: contains yellow marrow
3. ANS epiphysis: end of long bone; contains spongy bone
4. ANS articular cartilage: covers the ends of bones
5. ANS periosteum: membrane covering the bone
6. ANS endosteum: membrane lining medullary cavity
7. ANS trabeculae: interconnected threads of bone that make up
the structure of spongy bone
8. ANS red bone marrow: found in the spaces in spongy bone
and responsible for hemopoiesis
9. ANS hemopoiesis: blood cell formation
10.ANS osteon: basic structural unit of compact bone
11.ANS lamellae: concentric rings of bone in osteons
12.ANS lacunae: spaces in osteons containing osteocytes
13.ANS canaliculi: little canals containing blood vessels in osteons
14.ANS chondrocyte: cartilage cell
15.ANS matrix: the substance between cells secreted by the cells
16.ANS cartilage: skeletal system component that does not heal well.
17.ANS endochondral ossification: the process of bones forming
1/
, by replacing carti- lage
18.ANS epiphyseal plate (growth plate): where most bone
growth occurs; at the epiphyses of long bones
19.ANS osteoblasts: cells which secrete materials to form new bone
20.ANS osteoclasts: cells which reabsorb materials to destroy or
remodel bone
21.ANS sinuses: paired spaces (cavities) inside some of the cranial
bones
22.ANS sinusitis: inflammation of mucous membrane lining the
sinuses
23.ANS sutures: immovable joints between cranial bones
24.ANS fontanels: soft spots between as-yet-unfused cranial bones in
an infant
25.ANS scoliosis: side-to-side curvature of the spine
26.ANS "true ribs": ribs #1-7 attached by costal cartilage to the
sternum
