Thibodea CHAPTER 14 HEART
1. Cardiovascular System: ANS system that supplies out body's
transportation needs
2. Shape of the Heart: ANS triangular organ, closed-fist like
3. Apex: ANS blunt end of the heart, lower edge of heart that lies on
the diaphragm
4. Thoracic Cavity: ANS position of the heart
5. Apical heart rate: ANS heart sound heard at the apex of the heart
between the 5th and 6th ribs
6. cardiopulmonary resuscitation (cpr): ANS rhythmic
compression combined with artificial respiration which can be life
saving
7. atria: ANS the two upper chambers of the heart- the receiving
areas that pool incom- ing blood.
8. ventricles: ANS the two lower chambers of the heart, and they
pump blood out to the lungs and body.
9. auricle: ANS ear-like out pouching flaps formed by the atria
10.myocardium: ANS the middle muscular layer of the heart wall
11.interventricular septum: ANS separates the right and left
ventricles
12.endocarditis: ANS inflammation of the inner lining of the heart
13.endocardium: ANS Inner layer of the heart
1/
, 14.thrombus: ANS blood clot
15.pericardium: ANS protective sac enclosing the heart composed of
two layers with fluid between
16.visceral pericardium/epicardium: ANS Innermost layer of the
serous membrane around the heart
17.parietal pericardium: ANS outer layer of the pericardium
18.pericarditis: ANS inflammation of the pericardium
19.pericardial effusion: ANS escape of fluid into the pericardial sac
leading to cardiac tamponade
20.cardiac tamponade: ANS acute compression of the heart caused
by fluid accumu- lation in the pericardial cavity
21.systole: ANS contraction of the heart
22.diastole: ANS relaxation of the heart
