Do you think voters choose the characteristics they are looking for depending on the socio-economic and political environment - lack of jobs, riots, COVID-19, environmental concerns, other issues, etc.? I believe that when candidates for the president are first announced, people all over jump straight to judgment. The judge who they are what party they are, what they look like, and how they perceive themselves. "Americans desire a politician who both intuitively understands their struggles and has the competence necessary to get things done." (McDonald, Karol, Lilliana, 2020) We just want someone who can do right by us and understand our needs. The people want someone they can trust. With social media these days there is not a rumor that gets past anyone and most of the time people run with it without the supporting facts behind it. What it breaks down to is who can sell the most dreams to the American people, and once that dream is sold can they keep up with the demand of all the promises they wanted to keep. "Voters reward success by reelecting officials and punish failure by voting for the other party. The result is that politicians who want to stay in office have strong incentives to promote prosperity and to address the problems that occur, such as a bad economy, rising inflation, or threats from a foreign country." (GREENBERG & Page, 2018, p. 262) It’s like a reward and punishment trial and error that if you do well, they will make sure you get the vote next time, do bad, and well you just lost to someone else.
