Evidence-Based Proposal and Annotated Bibliography on Technology in Nursing
The use of technology in healthcare has continued to increase day by day. There are
varieties of technologies used in healthcare including telehealth, telemedicine, and artificial
intelligence, electronic medication administration with barcoding, telestroke, tele-psychiatry,
tele-icu and tele-genetics among others. Technology has both benefits and risks associated with
it. Some of the perceived and noted benefits include improving the quality of care given to
patients, improving access to care and patient safety among others. The selected technology in
this paper is telemedicine. Telemedicine entails providing medical care to patients by using
telecommunication technology (Barbosa et al., 2021). This mainly helps the patients and
providers address and overcome access to care. Examples of telemedicine include phone
consultations and also virtual follow-up visits through video technology. They aid in providing
preventive healthcare, chronic health care services, behavioral health and urgent care among
others. This technology is selected because of the potential positive effects it has on care, the
patient and providers. In order to determine the impact of telemedicine on quality of care, patient
safety and interprofessional collaboration, research was conducted on different studies and
reviews on the same. The research was done on different database including PubMed, Google
Scholar, Cochrane Library and EMBASE. Search terms were used to get the research studies and
articles. They include telemedicine, technology, and quality of care, patient safety and
interprofessional collaboration. Four peer reviewed articles were selected as a result of this. In
this paper, annotated bibliography of these peer reviewed articles is conducted.
