To comment on/criticise past actions, but it is now too late to change
I Shouldn’t have said that (but I did…)
She needn’t have bothered (but she did…)
We should never have bought that car (but we did…)
Use 2
To speculate about the past or present
‘Where’s John?’ ‘He might have gone home.’
The disaster could have been prevented.
The class must have ended by now

Gerunds
An independent ing-form used as a noun
So: if you can substitute the ing-form with a noun, it is a gerund
Swimming is very dangerous
Poison is very dangerous
I very much dislike working out
I very much dislike books
She started cleaning at six o’clock.
She started the car at six o’clock.
