PATIENT EDUCATION ISSUES
Older Adults Patient Education Issues Essay and Interview
There has been a major shift in healthcare to include the patient in all facets of care, from
admission to discharge and everywhere in-between. In the past, there was no collaboration
between the patient and healthcare professionals. Healthcare professionals decided the best
method of teaching, usually not dedicated specifically to the individual patient, and the patient
was to understand everything that was being told to them and to follow what the healthcare
professionals determined for the to do without question, because to question would be considered
non-compliant. Since I have been in healthcare, there has been a revolution healthcare, patient-
centered healthcare. “Health professional’s fostering more patient-centered teaching to enhance
patient compliance and promote patient satisfaction” (Falvo, 2011, p. 222). By including
patients, and having them deciding factors in their own health, this increases patient satisfaction
as well as facilitates patients adherence to medical treatment outside of the hospital setting. “It is
a formidable challenge to the health care providers to teach elderly patients due to the barriers
that come with old age like sensory changes, mental changes and chronic diseases” (Falvo,
2011). Tailoring our education based on each individual patient is an idea that healthcare
workers had to adapt to, but with this change, came great leaps between the patient-healthcare
worker relationship.
This author chose to interview Stephen Ochs, my families neighbor, who I grew up next

in 2014. Steve is an 82 year old male, who has a history or cardiac related events including
CAD with multiple stents, a four vessel coronary artery bypass grafting in 2000, and recently a
stay at the local hospital for near syncopal episode, where he was found to have complete heart
