ACTIVITY 1
Conduct a survey in your locality to find out about practices adopted to treat and
control diarrhoea at home. (The survey should relate only to infants and young
children).
Guidelines :
1) Decide on which group (s) you will talk to -is it going to be mothers, fathers,
grandmothers, older bro :rs and sisters of the young child? Or would you like
to talk to a combination such groups?

Your decision should be based on who
actually looks after young children in the family.
2) Decide on the tool you would use to collect information: a questionnaire or
interview schedule. Think about whether you could use other tools.
3) List the specific points about which you would like detailed information. You
could prepare the list based on practices which would have a great impact on
the health of the child.
Examples of such points are :
Knowledge of ORS preparation and use
Restriction of food intake or breast feeding .
Weaning practices
Causes of diarrhoea
Exposure to messages on TV,Radio.
4) Construct a questionnaire / interview schedule based on the points you have
listed in (3).
5) Use the tool you hake designed to get the required information from at least 10
people. Remember to record the name and age of each person and relevant
details about educational background, occupation, income, members in the -
family and so on.
6) Do not keep referring to the questionnaire if possible. People will feel more
comfortable with an informal discussion.
