Firestone discusses a means to eliminate gender equality by removing human
reproduction and in my opinion this would completely tarnish the human nature. Sex roles
among animals are natural and the reproduction process within animals is crucial to their
existence. It takes a male and a female animal to reproduce and further the species they belong
to. Male animals generally have an innate tendency to reproduce with as many females as
possible to further their genes, while females generally seek out the best possible mate to
reproduce with. These separate sex roles define males and females in a way that is necessary to
continue the evolutionary process. They are natural, normal, and essential to our existence.
The fact that humans can communicate through language somewhat complicates
things. Because of this, we have created societies, civilizations, cultures, and other such things
that define us as humans. These results have caused us to run into many problems. When
encountered with culture, humans find themselves following norms and customs that they rely
on to live their everyday life. Culture sets us apart from non-human animals because of the
issues it brings such as the male sex dominating females, which is where Firestone comes into
the mix.
The problem here lies not in the fact that there are separate sex roles between men and
women, but the way the humans have succumbed to them over time. There is nothing wrong
with sex roles, in fact, they are a positive aspect of our nature. It becomes a problem when
males and females are treated in a negative manner, because of these roles that they play. Sex
equality is not the answer to our problems; treating males and females equally would not be
productive because we are two very different creatures with different needs.
In regards to removing human reproduction from the bodies of males and females, we
run into the issue of not being able to live our lives to the fullest of our individual sex’s
potential. There is nothing wrong with reproducing naturally and it’s certainly not to root of our
issue. Removing reproduction would strip humans of their natural functions – in fact, we would
still have the same body types, voice pitches, mannerisms, hair styles, and all of the other
things that define us as separate sexes, naturally and culturally. It would not reduce or
eliminate sex inequality, but as I said before, equality is not what we should strive for – positive
treatment towards all people and not discriminating against a person due to their natural state
is what humans need.
