I will be writing this assignment based on the German language. There are numerous different
dialects of German spoken in many different areas. The three countries German is most widely
spoken in are Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. I will focus on two dialects; both are from
Austria.
a. Wälderisch
- This dialect is spoken in Bregenzerwald, which is a region in the eastern area of the
state Vorarlberg.
- A notable difference within this dialect of German is the word Farmer in German is
Bauer [baʊr] but pronounced in Wälderisch [buːr]
- A positive view associated with these people is that they produce much of the food
for the area.
- They are also great carpenters and manufacture woodwork.
- Speakers from other parts of Vorarlberg perceive this dialect as much simpler than
spoken Austrian German.
- The stereotypical idea of someone that comes from Bregenzerwald is a farmer that
maybe had little to no higher education and drinks much alcohol.
It is apparent that speakers of this dialect are people of a lower social class. People often mock
these speakers based on the way they pronounce words. They are often people with little to no
higher education and are of lower socio-economic status. They are seen as people with little care
