Morality and Human Sexuality
In Vincent Punzo’s article, Morality and Human Sexuality, a traditional view on sex is
produced with the idea of self a “historical being”. Punzo perceives premarital sex as immoral
and takes the time to draw a line between specific physical activities like two people playing
tennis, and having intercourse. He holds that sexual intercourse is a much deeper experience
because it not only requires one to give their entire body to another, but can unite two people
on an ultimate level of non-physical connection, as well.
The idea of man being a historical being is the notion that can connect their past with
the present consciousness. Punzo believes sexual intercourse must be thoughtfully considered
prior to marriage because the act will essentially join two historical beings together in one
moment. He believes that the sexuality of humans is the core part of their integrity and should
not be objectified; bodies should not be handed over to each other without commitment.
Finally, Punzo discusses the connection between sexuality and marriage. He believes
that marriage is the ultimate goal of a relationship and that it should be practiced due to
humans’ social character. He does not believe marriage necessarily needs to consist of a
ceremony in church or court, but can simply be the verbal commitment between two people,
agreeing to commit themselves to each other, emotionally and physically, for life.
