Electronic Health Records (EHR) are common in most healthcare settings. According to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), as cited by Thurston (2014), just two decades ago less than 20% of out of hospital physicians used EHR’s while in 2013 more than two-thirds were using EHR’s (Thurston, 2014). In 2014 approximately 75% of hospitals were using EHR’s (Goldstein, Navar, Pencina, Ioannidis, 2017). Accepting EHR’s can have substantial upfront cost, it becomes imperative we look at the positive side of EHR’s and understand they can help save lives, improve efficiency, facilitate billing, improve patient care, identify risks, and provide opportunities for research (Goldstein et al., 2017; Thurston, 2014). A great example of EHR’s benefit is to think about the current flu season. When using an EHR, an organization can earn incentives by meaningfully incorporating defined criteria into their record keeping. For example, one of the 15 core objectives for meaningful use (MU) is an EHR “demonstrating the capability to submit electronic data to immunization registries/systems” (Thurston, 2014, p. 512).
