strengths Fast learner, Attentive, Organized, Able to work at a fast pace and well under pressure (worked in retail), -I am never a procrastinator, I get things done on time, and know how to work well in a team -Positive, empathetic and compassionate, I have experience working with residents who have dementia and volunteer at a hospital so I know what it feels like to interact with patients. Weaknesses Sometimes I forget to ask for help, in worry that I might look unprepared or unknowledgable, But I realize it is always OK to ask for help, and it will help me learn something new, helping me grow as a person. defer to team members when it is necessary. My weaknesses is sometimes that I take on too many responsibilities and work a lot. During the summers, I would work over 50 hours a week, losing precious time with family and friends. But I realize that it is okay to take breaks and enjoy myself, life is too short to overwork yourself! Why medicine The field of medicine is a rewarding, , eye opening and humbling profession. Whether you are a doctor, nurse, or PA, being able "To observe closely what families go through and to be a part of their healing and growth is an honor," she says. "The gratitude of a family is priceless." Medicine allows me to combine my love for science, fascination of the human body and learning, while helping people in a way that felt meaningful and effective," I grew up watching health TV shows , including Mystery Diagnosis, Monsters inside me, and Dr. G: Medical Examiner, which were all displayed on TLC, which I know sounds pretty crazy but its true. Growing up in an ethiopian immigrant family, My family used think I was pretty insane for watching these shows, but it made realize the passion I have for medicine. Its an everchanging field, just being a part of the healing process, and allowing to hear peoples stories, and ultimately saving their lives is one of the most rewarding things ill ever experience, which is what attracts me to the field. I want to be able to help people while practicing and studying medicine. I believe health is one of the most important aspects of a persons life. If you are healthy you will be able to live an enjoyable life. Why a scribe As an aspiring physician assistant (PA), I believe that working as a medical scribe is the best position to familiarize myself with patient care. I want to work as a medical scribe so I can learn more about the field of medicine. As a ScribeAmerica Scribe, I will be there with the physician, so I have the opportunity to listen to the signs and symptoms that help the health professional come to a diagnosis, which will, in the long run, help me able to anticipate what some of these diagnoses may be. In addition, working as a medical scribe will help me gain essential skills vital to being a health professional, such as teamwork and communication skills. As a medical scribe, I'll be able to observe the respect given to team members and watch them help one another, and the way doctors, nurses, and Physician Assistants (PA) interact with one another. Over time, I will also develop stronger communication skills in medical language, which is vital once I enter PA school. All in all, I want to work as a medical scribe to gain familiarity with hospital protocol, develop relationships with physicians and other health professionals, gain essential skills such as teamwork and communication skills, and witness the clinical aspect of patient care and medicine, which is constantly transforming. Future plans I plan on applying to a physician assistant program next year. Maybe take a year off to obtain HCE and PCE A time I had to deal with conflict or a difficult group member Working in senior facility in memory care and dealing with a lazy coworker. had 18-20 residents on my floor and only 2 caregivers, usually a float caregiver floating between the 2 floors but they called in. I talked to the person and talked to manager Also had experiences where there were members of a group project werent cooperating. To resolve this , I try to initiate a group discussion where all members go around and contribute an idea and add on to other group members ideas. This was everyone will have a voice and everyone will have contributued. What do you think a scribe does each day? A medical scribe is literally physicians "right-hand", they are continuously present with the physician, I think a medical scribe is bascially taking notes during a patient interview, writing up the encounter on a medical chart, and assisting with the flow of patients depending on the facility the scribe is working at. They specialize in charting physician-patient encounters and also generate referral letters for them. Scribes save health professionals a lot of time since they are assisting them with documentation, giving health professionals more time to see patients thoroughly and develop positive connections with them. Likewise, depending on the facility, medical scribes may have duties to manage at various times throughout their shift, such as calling consults and obtaining medical records from other facilities. The ultimate goal of having a medical scribe is to improve physician productivity by allowing them to focus on the medical decision making, thereby improving patient flow and overall outcomes. List a time I faced adversity -dad in hospital received 3rd stroke story -I became power of attorney, very hard especially after he first transitioned from the hospital to senior living facility Questions I have for them? Do medical scribes mainly work with phyisicians? What about PAs? Does being a medical scribe help students transition to graduate school (whether its PA or MD school) a lot easier since they are already familiar with the medical terminology? What departments within the hospital (besides the ER) can scribes work in? and do medical scribes work in specialized clinics (such as dermatology or gastrology clinics)? Describe a time when you were criticized and how did you react? -Lacrosse team story joined junior year and got into JV was the only african american person coaches told me lacross wasnt for me since I couldn't cradle, and wasn't a fast runner. Worked hard n proved them wrong, received the most turnovers out all Jv and varsity Tell me about yourself ... Describe the role you take in team activities/projects ... How do you handle stress and multitasking? Personally, I like to tackle one project at a time. It allows me to focus on the task at hand. However, in medicine, while that would be ideal, the reality is that I need to be able to adjust to outside forces. When a lot of things come at me at once, I create a checklist, which helps me to prioritize and guides me to work on the most pressing needs first. In regards to how I deal with stress, I believe it can be a big motivator for me. A healthy amount of stress can help me produce efficient, quality work, by giving me a picture of what my colleagues need from me and when. I've experienced stressful situations that most times bring my coworkers and I together, and have seen some of our best work come from pressure. Besides communication, what is another important part of working in a team to you? Efficiency and productivity. When working in a team, it is also important that you are getting tasks done efficiently and with quality. When you are working in a team, you become more efficient and productive because it allows the workload to be shared, reducing pressure on individuals, and ensures tasks are being completed within a set time frame. Having a group that is efficient and productive will improves job satisfaction and increases work pace. How can I trust that you will show up on time and will be able to work in a fast-paced environment? Being in the workforce for quite a while now, I believe the key to being a great employee is showing up on time. Although life may get in the way sometimes, I always put in my best effort to show up on time, or even early to all of my shifts. If you ask my coworkers or managers, I am never late, and if I am I will always call in ahead of time to notify my manager and coworkers. In terms of working in a fast paced environment, I worked in retail for almost 2 years, and working during black fridays and the holidays can be pretty hectic, with long lines of customers, and chaos at the fitting rooms. I was still able to work efficiently in the fast paced environment in retail, so I definitely believe this will be a huge help to working in a fast paced environment in the ER. Why do you think you would be a good fit to be a medical scribe? I am a hard-worker, motivated, responsible, and focused. I work well under pressure and can work long hours. As a future PA, I have a passion for medicine and an enthusiasm for learning that I feel will be evident in my work, and this position will also aid me to gain the skills necessary to become the best PA I can be, while also accumulating patient care hours for PA school. Likewise, Taking a medical terminology and anatomy classes last year as well as shadowing has given me familiarity with hospital protocol and medical terminology, skills that will enable me to work efficiently as a medical scribe. In my work as a nursing assistant at at senior living facility consisting, I work with dementia residents, who need assistance with almost all aspects of daily living . This experience has taught me the importance of patience, discretion, and respect when dealing with patients and their medical histories, all vitals skills which will assist me in being an efficient and knowledgable medical scribe. Tell me about the last time you or someone you knew was sick. What were the symptoms, how did they progress, what happened, etc. I remember one day my father seemed out of the ordinary. He was never the type of person to put his health as priority. He's had diabetes his whole life, and lived with high blood pressure. I came home one day and saw his speech was beginning to slur. It began harder for him to speak and his mouth was distorted to one side, it was scary for me to see at 14, but I definitely knew something was wrong. I called my mom, whom was at work, and told her what I noticed, and she told me to call my older sister to drive him to the hospital, so I called her and she arrived to take him to the hospital. I was nervous, I didn't know if my father was going to make it. He was beginning to lose sense on his right side, so we drove as fast as we could to the hospital, and admitted him to the ER. They gave him medication, and diagnosed him with a stroke. Luckily we arrived at the ER on time, or it could've gone worse. My father was just fine and was given blood pressure medications to ease his blood pressure.
