Nursing is an integral part of the healthcare system. Nurses play a critical role in
enhancing the quality of care provided to patients and consequently improve patient outcomes.
The healthcare system is always under constant enhancement as the challenges it faces are solved
from day-to-day. Nurses are part of the solution developers as they conduct research to solve
specific problems they identify within the health care systems. These problems are numerous and
include but are not limited to preventing falls and injuries, reducing medical errors, reducing the
development of chronic health conditions, promoting health and preventing diseases, preventing
pressure ulcers, e.t.c. Nurses begin by identifying the problems, gathering data about the
problems through research, and formulating solutions based on the findings of their research.
The Problem
The problem that I will be addressing is the problem of the acquisition of substance
abuse treatment among people with substance abuse disorders from marginalized and poor
communities e.g. American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Providing clinical services
to help drug addicts from marginalized and poor communities recover from their addiction is
faced by many challenges. The main cause of this is the poverty level of these communities. For
these populations, basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing come first, and seeking
outpatient treatment comes last leave alone residential treatment. They are unable to travel as
they have no cars, gas, or money to visit the rehabilitation centers especially considering that the
