Introduction
In this section of the essay the author will describe, with the support of diagrams, the
general layout and operation of a pneumatic actuation system, a hydraulic actuation
system and a mechanical handling system. The author will also describe the basic
principle + operation of a fork lift truck.
What is a forklift truck?
A forklift truck is basically a small vehicle with a device linked at the front that is used
to lift and carry heavy loads. The advantage of using a forklift truck is to carry heavy
loads which both employers and employees cannot lift as the loads are usually too
heavy for a person to carry around in an engineering industry. The disadvantage of
using a forklift truck is that if it carries more load than that it can tolerate, all the
heavy objects will fall off the forklift truck, this could lead to the employers and
employees getting serious injuries and might force them to take a couple of weeks
off depending on how severe the injury is. In terms of application, the forklift is used
in engineering or manufacturing industries as the author have stated previously, to lift
or carry heavy objects and move them from one place to another.
The operation of a forklift truck
Step 1 - the person driving the forklift should be competent and have a license to
drive the vehicle to avoid risky situations inside the engineering industry.

, Step 2 – full kit and proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) should be worn by
the driver for the safety of himself and other workers in the engineering industry.
Step 3 – the equipment on the forklift truck will have to be inspected properly and
check for the following: brakes, steering controls, tyres to make sure no accidents
will happen and that everyone inside the engineering industry is safe.
Step 4 – the belt should be put on and then start the forklift truck.
Step 5 – look around to make sure that the area where the driver will be passing
through is free from engineering components which, can result to having an unsafe
environment.
Step 6 – drive at a normal speed to avoid accidents.
Step 7 – try to stay away from uneven and slippery surfaces.
Step 8 – make sure that the load carried by the forklift truck does not exceed the
weight limit which the forklift can take.
Step 9 – make sure that the driver can clearly see his way and where he is taking
the load.
Step 10 – make sure that the heavy loads are spread equally.
Step 11 – when the forklift is driven up a particular ramp, the driver will have to
ensure to move forward and when coming down the ramp, come down backwards.
More importantly, do not unload engineering objects when the forklift is about to turn
in a specific direction on the ramp.
Step 12 – ensure that it has enough fuel.
Step 13 – finally, park the forklift in the correct area, guarantee that the vehicle is
turned off and is put back to the same condition, so, the next driver can use it safely.
Analysis and Conclusion
In conclusion, I think that it is significant for engineers to understand how a forklift
operates inside an engineering industry and what it is used for.
