A6 Exam 2023
Ammeter - ANSWER-An ammeter is an instrument used for measuring the current flow
in an electrical or electronic circuit. Some ammeters are intended for use in a direct
current (DC) circuit, others are designed for alternating current (AC) circuits.
Ampere - ANSWER-unit for measuring electrical current flow
Analog Meter - ANSWER-Piece of electrical test equipment that uses a moving needle
to indicate the value of electrical characteristics.
Armature - ANSWER-A current carrying conductor inside a motor, which reacts to the
magnetic field of the motor by moving to a weaker area of the field. Movement of the
armature provides mechanical energy for work.
Auto-ranging - ANSWER-A feature of most digital multimeters that automatically selects
the appropriate test range without the need of operator input.
Available Voltage - ANSWER-The voltage that an electrical device can supply after all
losses are taken into account.
Buss Bar - ANSWER-A solid metal strip used as a conductor and common connection
point for wires and devices.
Capacitor - ANSWER-A passive electronic component that stores energy in the form of
an electrostatic field. In its simplest form, a capacitor consists of 2 conducting plates
separated by an insulating material called the dielectric.
Carbon Pile - ANSWER-Fixed or variable resistance load unit which simulates vehicle
loads for battery and/or generator testing
Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) - ANSWER-An electron beam tube with a cathode at one end
and an anode at the screen end. The ray of electrons shot from the cathode to the
anode creates a pattern on the luminescent screen.
Clamping Diode - ANSWER-A diode installed to eliminate the voltage spike from a
collapsing coil from damaging electronic systems.
Commutator - ANSWER-A segmented ring attached to one end of an armature in a
motor. It makes the electrical connection between the armature and brushes to provide
a direct current path to the armature.
, Continuity - ANSWER-Continuous, unbroken; used to describe a working electrical
circuit or component that is not open.
Data Bus - ANSWER-Collections of wires through which data is transmitted from one
part of computer to another. The bus carries data with connections between and within
the CPU, memory, and peripherals. The internal bus connects all internal computer
components to the CPU and the main memory The expansion bus enables expansion
boards to access the CPU and memory. The data bus transfers actual data while the
address bus transfers information about where the data should go.
Data Link Connector (DLC) - ANSWER-A dedicated point for attaching a scan tool to
the vehicle communications network
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) - ANSWER-A numeric or alphanumeric code assigned
to a particular fault in an onboard electronic system
Digital Meter - ANSWER-A meter that provides a numerical read-out of the measured
value.
Diode - ANSWER-An electrical "check-valve". They allow current flow in one direction
only.
Drive-by-Wire - ANSWER-A method of controlling the vehicle without control cables or
rods. The throttle is actuated based on input from a potentiometer attached to the
accelerator pedal.
Duty Cycle - ANSWER-The percentage of total time in one complete on-off-on cycle
during which a solenoid is energized
Electrolyte - ANSWER-The chemical solution, composed of sulfur acid and water that
conducts electricity and reacts with the plate materials in a battery
Field Circuit - ANSWER-The charging system circuit that delivers current to energize
the generator field.
Forward Biased - ANSWER-The term applied to a diode when current is allowed to flow
in the circuit
Frequency - ANSWER-The number of periodic voltage oscillations, or waves, occurring
in one second, usually expressed as Hertz (Hz) or cycles per second.
Gassing - ANSWER-The emission of hydrogen and oxygen gases from battery cells
during charging.
Heat Shrink Tape - ANSWER-Similar to heat shrink tube but is applied like electrical
tape then heated to seal
