TOPIC 2 DISCUSSION QUESTION 1
Identify at least three regulatory bodies or industry regulations that specify certification, licensure requirements,
or scope of practice for your specialty. Discuss the way these bodies or regulations influence the educational
requirements and experiences for your specialty. Advanced practice registered nurses must incorporate the APRN
consensus model in their response.
A nursing educator is both a nurse and an educator. They teach both young and old minds on how to
safely and effectively give care to their patients through clinical and educational experience. One of the
biggest issues with the shortage of nursing, besides the fact that many nurses are beginning to retire, is
that there are not enough educators to effectively teach students of all ages about nursing. The National
League for Nursing defines academic nurse educator as a “specialty area and advanced practice role
within professional nursing” (Lindell, Hagler, & Poindexter, 2015).
American Nurse Today states, a “nurse educator must have at least a masters degree; doctoral preparation
is preferred” (Lindell, Hagler, & Poindexter, 2015). Florida requires an ARNP to:
“1. Hold a valid registered nurse license from any US jurisdiction.
2. Submit proof of national advanced practice certification from an approved nursing specialty
board.
3. Show proof of malpractice insurance or exemption.
4. Must submit to having their fingerprints taken and submitted to the Florida Department of
Law Enforcement (FDLE) for conducting a search for any Florida and national criminal history
records that may pertain to the applicant,” (Florida Board of Nursing, 2019).
Unlike APRNs, nurse educators do not require a certification, “though it can establish your knowledge
and practice of professional standards to potential employers,” (Learn.org, 2019). Most nurse educator
positions require that a nurse at least have a bachelors degree in nursing.
Nurse educators are expected to work to the full extent of their scope of practice. The National League
for Nursing states that Nurse Educators must:
“1. Facilitate Learning
a. Implements a variety of teaching strategies appropriate to learner needs, desired
learner outcomes, content, and context.
b. Grounds strategies in educational theory and evidence-based teachingpractices
c. Practices skilled oral, written, and electronic communication that reflects an
awareness of self and others, along with an ability to convey ideas in a variety of
contexts
d. Models critical and reflective thinking
e. Creates opportunities for learners to develop their critical thinking and critical
reasoning skills
