ELA State Test Review - Grade 6 Theme - ANS-The message or lesson of a text. Central Idea - ANS-What a story is mainly about. Claim - ANS-An argument, or thesis, supported with evidence and analysis. Context Clues - ANS-Hints to help define an unknown word or phrase. Prefix - ANS-A word or letters placed before a whole word. Ex: UNhappy. Author's Purpose - ANS-An author's reason for writing the text. Author's Point of View/Perspective - ANS-An author's feelings or opinion on a topic. Summary - ANS-A brief statement or account of the main points of a text. Inference - ANS-A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning. Cause & Effect - ANS-Why an event happens and then what happens because of it. Imagery - ANS-A type of figurative language used to help readers visualize the story being told. Reveal - ANS-To make information known. Convey - ANS-To communicate an idea; to make an idea understandable. 3 Types of Questions on State Test - ANS-Multiple Choice, Short Response, Extended Response. Word Choice - ANS-A writer's selection of words. Figurative Language - ANS-Language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. Tone - ANS-The emotions an author develops through word choice. Stanza - ANS-A group of lines in a poem, like a paragraph in a story. Short Response format - ANS-CEAEAC.
