CHAPTER I
PROBLEMS AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
This chapter includes the introduction, conceptual framework, statement of
the problem, scope and limitation, significance of the study and the definition of
terms used.
Introduction
The transition of education in the Philippines from traditional learning
modality to blended learning modality is to addressed the threat of Corona virus
pandemic and ensure learning continuity of the students. This situation marked
the changed not only in Mathematics education but the entire Department of
Education as we observe the paradigm shift of technology-based Education. It
emphasizes the significance of digital technology in delivering knowledge to the
students. Integrating technology in Mathematics instruction makes the interaction
between the teacher and the learners more active.
Nowadays, learners are called as digital natives. They are use technology
in everything they do. They use digital technology in their learning, such as
researching, reading news, presentation of report, watching educational videos,
playing games, and many more. Which shows how they are excel in exploiting
the usage of digital technology.
Transmitting knowledge to the learners and help them understand its
mathematical concept and ideas is one of the teacher’s duty. As the concerns of

the students addressed it will lead them to keeps them self-motivated, interested
and active which help the teacher to ensure the competency of the student in
every lessons. Eventually, as the teacher realized the effects integration of digital
technology in mathematics instruction to the students and knowing the right
technology to be used will helps the teacher create a better teaching strategy.
Digital technology use as an amplifier to the goals of the lesson and as an
organizer on Mathematics instructions. With the help of digital platform, teachers
create more opportunities for the learners, and engaging digital environment. And
the easiest, most efficient and most beneficial way to achieve the goal of making
sense of a Mathematical ideas is through technology. Teacher use of digital
platform as a means of enhancing or illuminating Mathematical and statistics
concept.
The usage and impact of digital platform that presented above are
connected with different purposes and all can lead to improved students
learning. It is aligned to the integration of technology in teaching and Learning of
aide memoire of DepEd Order 78 s. 2010 Guidelines on the Implementation of
the DepEd Computerization Program and the Digital Rise Program of DepEd.1
It is also consistent to the Standard and Position of National Council of
Teachers of Mathematics which is strategic use of Technology in teaching and
Learning Mathematics.2

The Philippine educational sector experienced a massive paradigm shift
that integrated technology into learning, creating new modalities. Some
educational institutions have already adopted a new learning model that
combines face-to-face and online learning called HyFlex or Hybrid-Flexible.3
As living in a digital era, learners in generation z they most prefer to use
their own gadgets as their tools to express their feelings and improve their critical
thinking skills. The most popular digital platform that mostly use by the learners
are Facebook and YouTube. According to the research 100% of the population of
the learners have their own Facebook account, they use it to post, comment, and
follow educational pages and groups and serve to communicate with their peers
and teachers. YouTube is commonly use by the learners to watch educational
videos to improve their critical thinking skills.
Now that the students are back to school, are they still incline on using
digital platform such as Facebook and YouTube or most prefer to study in
traditional way? So, the researchers wants to know what is the role of digital
platform in Mathematics instruction now that we are all back to face-to-face.
What is its role in the students learning?

Several studies conducted research about educational theories and some
of them focus particularly on digital platform and its use in education. To explore
what type of technology is to be use and how to use it in teaching-learning
