Every sports person journey will include the ability to learn, improve and develop their skills to make
their performance better in every level of sport from grass roots to elite teams. A sports coach will
develop skill strategy’s and make plans to enhance the development of skills of the people they are
coaching and will adjust it to motivate and encourage people with less experience as well as the
ones who are at the top of their sport to make sure they progress and achieve their goals and full
potential. An example is to vary workouts and training and to track and measure performance of the
atheletes as well as good practise drills and repeating each skill until there is confidence that the
athelete is performing it well
A good development of techniques in sport is how a coach can improve the way a sports person
displays the skills they have using the right technique which will improve performance and reduce
the risk of injury. For example in rugby a player making a tackle using the correct technique will be
more effective but also reduce the risk of injuring themselves or the other player. The skill of tackling
in rugby is improved with good technique.
The plan for atheletes to use their skills successfully to achieve a desired outcome is a tactical
strategy . A good coach will develop tactical performance in a lot of ways, encouraging good
communication can allow team players to use communication for example in rugby each team will
have words for a set piece of play in attack or defence. If one player sees an opportunity they will
shout that coded word and other players will know their role and immediately move to position
the, selves to make that set piece happen. This could be a big advantage and everyone knows what
they are supposed to do to achieve a common goal. A good coach will use strategy’s to improve
problem solving and decision making skills as well as confidence and spend time analysing the
opponent for strengths and weaknesses and develop a plan to overcome or defend the strength
areas of the opposition or to attack the weakness and score points in tactical sessions if they don’t
do this well a team can have the right skill and technique but not find a way together to get past the
defending player or defend against attack successfully
Section 1 and 2. Skill and technique and tactical development strategies
Isolated practises
Is fundamental to developing touch in sport , it encourages atheletes to focus on one specific skill or
technique before moving onto another one. Coaches use isolated practises when they are
introducing a new skill or technique or repeating one that is not already used in good performance
to make it better. Isolated practises of a skill or technique are mainly for beginners or less able
atheletes but can be returned to for atheletes to maintain or make their skills and techniques better
so isolated practises are used and repeated by all levels in sport. This also helps to increase the skill
level and fitness as one skill is being developed at one time, it is often a drill or exercise which is
broken down into parts before being combined to practise the full sequence together. Isolated
practises are isolated this means it is an individual exercise and no opponent is needed so atheletes
can practise independently a good example is dribbling in basketball. The coach will lay out cones
and asks the atheletes to dribble around the cones in a sequence, this will improve hand eye
coordination movement and control of the ball and the body movement and coordination of the
sports person this can be adapted to increase progress and technique for example the coach can lay
out the cones but put certain rules in place the player can only bounce three times between cones
or only use one hand, this will encourage the player to use different skills and tactics to achieve the
session and keep within the rules. If the less dominant hand is used it could improve the control of
the ball . Isolated practises and the repetition does develop a high level of technique. A disadvantage
to isolated practises is that it takes time to perform with limited space and a team of players some
