Complexity thinking: can it provide a new, overarching paradigm for dealing with these
complex problems, also called ‘wicked problems’?
On a global level: food, energy demands and global warming, migration
Grand challenges at the interface of men and earth
On an individual level: globalization, specialization, fragmentation, traditional certainties
have disappeared, identity issues, stress what option to choose of all available options.
Why are these complex problems ‘wicked’ problems?
- Problems on different system levels (local, regional, global)
- Various factors at play
- No consensus on problem definition or solutions (think of climate ontkenners)
- Problems on different system levels
- Connectivity
- Globalization
- As non-linear interactions and retroactions are involved there are no
straightforward explanations nor any silver bullet solutions.
- Difficult if not impossible to predict what will be the effects of interventions
meant to help solve the issue
- Problems not only complex but also persistent:
o Proposed solutions are disputed and unwanted side-effects, for instance
when the perspective of important stakeholders are not (sufficiently)
taken into consideration.
- The problem can not be solved by one type of experts, a multiplicity of
perspectives is entailed.
To conclude:
, • Wicked problems are multi-faceted issues that demand a variety of perspectives on
the challenges at hand.
• Some say these can and should all be taken together in an overarching complexity
paradigm. Some think this paradigm has already arrived.
• Other are critical whether complexity thinking will be able to offer a suitable
framework to deal with the challenges ahead.
