due to repeated ear infections

Nose & sinuses assessment
o Inspection of nose and patency testing
Looking to see if the septum is deviated
Redness, swelling, allergies (pale)
Observing for any polyps that could be blocking the nose and
preventing patient from breathing
o Palpation of external nose
o Inspection of nasal cavity using nasal speculum
o Palpation of sinuses → any tenderness?
o Percussion of sinuses → presence of dullness?
DIRECT PERCUSSION- with fingertips
o Transillumination of sinuses
Normal: sinus appears hollow and light shines through giving a
reddish glow
Abnormal: inflamed and blocked with secretions or mucus →
light fails to shrine through and the sinus appears opaque
Light source in the mouth = maxillary
Light source on the cheek pointing towards the forehead OR
underneath the eyebrow = frontal
Mouth and throat assessment:
o Inspection and palpation of lips
Observe for dryness or cracking of the lips
o Inspection of teeth
Are there any dental caries?
o Inspection and palpation of buccal mucosa, gums, and tongue
Any inflammation?
o Inspection of salivary glands
Any enlargements?
o Inspection of throat, tonsils
Tonsil grading:
1 & 2+ : normal
3 + : abnormal; past posterior pillars of the mouth →
starting to obstruct airway
